Understanding My Device

How the detection system works.
  1. The Passive IR detection system detects any heat variation (human and animal activity, moving cars, branches in the sun, etc). When a change in heat and motion is perceived, the detection system triggers the camera to take a photo or video.
  2. The detection system consists of 2 essential parts: the infrared sensor and the Fresnel detection lens.
  3. The sensor is hidden inside the camera. It is the piece that detects the changes in heat and detects motion.
  4. The Fresnel lens is a molded plastic lens that improves the sensitivity and accuracy of the sensor. If your lens is damaged, the detection system will no longer be optimal. It is possible to order a new one.
  5. We recommend hanging the camera at the height of the heat source being aimed at. For deer it is recommended to install the camera one meter above the ground, or 3 feet high.
  6. To maximize the range of your detection system, the device should be installed parallel to the ground. If your device is tilted toward the ground, the detection range will be reduced.
  7. You should never install the device behind any type of shielding material such as glass or plexiglass and ensure the area within the detection range is clear of anything that may move or emit heat from the sun such as grass, limbs, metal or large rocks.

    The delay between the time the heat movement is detected, and the photo is taken is called the “trigger speed”. LSHINE offers the fastest trigger speed on the market: up to 0.1 seconds!

  1. Resolution and format of the images changes depending on the camera. A photo is taken immediately after the detection system detects motion. Photos are taken in color during the day and in black and white at night.
  2. For best results, use good batteries and a compatible memory card in the camera. 
  3. It is possible to adjust the quality of the photos taken in the settings. The higher the quality of the photos, the more space they take up on the memory card.
Before activating my device
  1. Make sure that the device is turned OFF before inserting the batteries and memory card.
  2. Once the batteries and memory card are inserted, you can turn the unit ON.
    CAUTION: Never remove the batteries or memory card while the unit is in operation. This could damage the photos and / or videos on the memory card or even the device.
  3. To turn OFF the device and / or remove the memory card, please turn the power switch OFF and wait 5 seconds before doing any other operations.
  4. It is strongly recommended to remove the batteries if the device is no longer in use or if it is stored for a long period of time. It is also very important to remove the batteries from the unit if it is sent for repairs or exchange.
  5. Consult the “What to do before taking your camera to the field.” section to prepare your device. Make sure you understand the proper operation of the device before deploying it in the field. It will save you time!

All LSHINE devices need a memory card to function, either and SD or Micro SD, depending on the device. We always recommend using a premium quality SD or MicroSD card that is class 10, 2-32 GB and SDHC. Always long-format your SD or MicroSD card, even if it is new. Formatting also helps prevent file incompatibility issues caused by having used the same card in another device.

HOW TO INSERT THE SD OR MICROSD CARD?

When inserting the memory card into the camera:

  • Check the direction to insert the memory card correctly. There is an icon near the opening where you should insert the card that will tell you the correct direction.
  • Gently insert the memory card into the opening and push lightly with your finger.
  • You will hear a “click” indicating that it is inserted properly.

When it is time to remove the memory card:

  • Press lightly on the memory card with your finger. You will hear a “click”.
  • Slowly release the pressure. The card should come out halfway by itself.
  • Remove the card with your fingers.

 

WHY CAN’T I USE A MICROSD CARD IN AN SD ADAPTOR?

If your camera requires a full-size SD card, using a MicroSD card in an SD adaptor will slow the performance of your camera and potentially cause loss of data. This could prevent some of your photos from saving or even transmitting to your app.

The SD adaptor is only meant for inserting a MicroSD card into the SD card slot on your computer, when formatting or updating your firmware.

 

WHAT IS AN SD OR MIRCOSD CARD CORRUPTION?

Hidden read only files can corrupt your SD or MicroSD card. Corruptions make your memory card either slow or unusable. This can slow your camera down or even prevent your photos or videos from being saved or sent. The corruption can either be temporary or permanent, which is why we recommend always having an extra card on-hand.

There are many reasons that cause an SD or MicroSD card to become corrupted. Poor-quality cards and off-brands are prone to corruption. If you are using a premium quality card, the corruption can be due to extended wear and tear, removing the card while files are transferring and improper ejection to name a few.

HOW TO TEST IF YOUR SD OR MICROSD CARD IS TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY CORRUPTED?

A temporary corruption can be fixed with a long format (FAT/ FAT32 setting). If the card does not work even after long format, it means that its permanently corrupted. In this case, you will need to replace the card. Watch this video to learn how to format your SD or MicroSD card.

 

CAN IT BE THE FIRMWARE INSTALLED ON THE SD OR MICROSD CARD THAT IS CORRUPTED?

Yes, it is possible. First start by re-formatting the SD or MicroSD card with FAT/FAT32 setting and then restart the camera to check for photo transmissions. If the issue persists, try re-installing the firmware and restart the device again. Be sure to pay attention to the camera’s LED patterns to avoid turning it off during an update.

 

LOOKOUT FOR FAKE SD AND MICROSD CARDS!

The internet is full of counterfeit SD and MicroSD cards. It is very important that you purchase them from a reputable source. To understand if your card is a fake one, compare it to a photo on the brand’s official website to see if you can spot any discrepancies. The colors, the writing on the card or other visual cues might be different.

 

WHY IS MY SD CARD WRITE PROTECTED?

Write protection is a data protection feature that prevents you from altering the stored data on the SD card. This feature will neither let you delete any existing data or add any new form of data to the card. If you are getting a message that your SD card is write-protected, it usually means the lock switch on the side of the card has accidentally been moved to the lock position. The same process can happen with MicroSD cards while they are inserted in the SD card adaptor. If the switch is moved while they are in the adaptor, it will lock the MicroSD card.

To fix this issue, make sure the lock switch is slid up (unlock position). The location and configuration may vary depending on the card. If you notice that the lock switch is loose and moves very easily, then it likely that the switch is sliding to the locked position whenever the card is placed inside the camera. In this case you will need to replace the card.

Our camera models are compatible with different battery types. Most of our models require AA batteries or a lithium battery back. 

Some of our models support using a 12V external battery pack in addition to the AA batteries or lithium battery pack for an extra-long battery life.

BATTERY TYPES

AA

We strongly recommend testing AA batteries (even new ones) with a multimeter before use. Make sure they are at least 1.5V and that all the batteries have the same battery percentage (or very close to). If you have one of eight batteries that is dead, your camera could stop transmitting photos.  

Our devices require the following types of AA batteries: 

  • non-rechargeable, 

  • from a premium brand, 

  • that are either lithium or alkaline.  

Off brand batteries may provide unreliable voltage or inconsistent battery life which can affect camera function.  

LIT Battery Pack

Some of our camera models are compatible with a SPYPOINT rechargeable lithium battery pack. We recommend charging the battery pack for a maximum of 12 hours.  

Available models:

  • LIT 22: FLEX Series
  • LIT 10: LINK-MICRO Series and CELL-LINK
  • LIT 09: LINK-S Series, LINK-EVO et some FORCE models.
Solar panel with lithium battery

The solar panel can provide your camera with at least six months of autonomy. Before installation, charge the panel for 5-6 hours with the DC power adapter. When you install it, connect it to the 12V output port on your camera. Orient the panel so that it catches as much light as possible, ideally facing south.

It is compatible with all SPYPOINT cameras with a 12V socket.

12V

The 12V is an external battery pack that provides an extra-long life to most of our device models. It can be used in addition to AA batteries or the SPYPOINT lithium battery packs, as a supplemental source of power.  

Internal Battery

Our solar cameras are built with an internal battery. This includes the LINK-S, LINK-S-DARK and SOLAR-DARK. The solar panel provides solar energy to this internal battery, but it still needs to be charged. This should be done for 24-48 hours by plugging in the SPYPOINT charging cable provided.  

BATTERY TYPE SETTING 

Please be sure that the Battery Type setting matches the batteries you are using in your device to ensure an accurate percentage reading. To do so:
Open the mobile app > Cameras > Settings (of the respective camera) > Advanced Configuration > Battery Type.  

CAMERA SETTINGS 

Be sure to adjust the settings of your device according to your needs, but be aware that many settings directly impact battery life like, transfer frequency, photo burst, photo delay, video, etc.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use AA batteries and an external 12 Volt battery at the same time? 

Yes, you can. If the 12V battery dies, it will use the AA as a backup.
All our devices are compatible with 12V batteries (which have a much longer life than AA batteries). All you need is the proper cable. 

Why is my battery draining too fast ?

There can be many factors causing the battery to drain quickly: 

  • Transfer frequency: Cellular transmission, especially if your camera is set to “Each Detection.” The higher the frequency of photo transfers, the faster the batteries drain. 

  • Videos: Video mode requires the camera to stay in action longer, which will consume the batteries faster. Also, the longer the video, the faster the batteries will drain. 

  • Night mode: This mode requires the flash to turn on to take a proper photo, which consumes more power. The “Boost” and “Blur reduction” options in Night mode drain batteries faster than “Optimal” or “No Glow.” 

  • Polarity– AA batteries placed upside down. If you have new batteries, but the camera does not display 100% battery level, one of the batteries may be upside down. 

  • Delay: This feature allows you to select the time elapsed before the camera can detect again and take the next photo. If you want to capture multiple photos, you will need to use a shorter delay which means more battery consumption. The shorter the delay, the more photos the camera will take, which will consume the batteries faster.  

  • Multishot:  This option tells the camera how many photos it should take for each detection. The higher is the multishot, the more pictures the camera will take, which will consume the batteries faster. 

  • Low signal: When the signal is low, the camera will try to establish a connection for a longer period, which will consume more batteries.  

  • Power Source: Go to Settings > Advanced Configuration > Power Source and check if the correct battery type is selected for your camera. The SPYPOINT app will display incorrect battery reading if the power source is set incorrectly.  

Why is my camera saying the battery is low when I just changed them? 
  • Make sure all the batteries are of the same brand and have the same charge.  

  • Check that all the batteries are placed correctly in the camera; sometimes one or two can be in the wrong polarity and this affects the cameras functioning. 

  • If the camera is communicating with the SPYPOINT app, check what type of battery is selected. If the wrong type is selected, change the selection to the correct power source. 

  • Perform a factory reset to reset the values (this process differs depending on the model of camera). 

If the power issue persists, you will need to contact our customer support team for further assistance. 

Why does my battery say 0%? 

If your battery reading stays at 0%, even after charging the SPYPOINT lithium battery pack all night or using fresh AA batteries, then there may be a software glitch caused by the camera attempting to read from the wrong battery type. This does not affect the functionality of the camera; it will still sync and take photos despite the reading being wrong. 

To fix this issue, please access the Settings Advanced Configuration in the SPYPOINT app and change the Power Source, or if it is a LINK-S, Link-Dark or any other SPYPOINT camera with a screen, then you may attempt a factory reset to adjust the settings. 

How well do SPYPOINT cameras work in below freezing temperatures? 

All SPYPOINT cameras have been tested and have been approved for operating in temperatures from -30 to 50 degrees Celsius or -22 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. 

If you plan on using the camera in very cold climates, we recommend using lithium batteries, as they tend to perform better in the colder weather.

How to Properly Test Your Device.

Before testing your device, make sure you have a fresh set of batteries from the same package and a formatted SD or microSD card (depending on the model) between 2 GB and 32 GB. Test your device at home before taking it to the field.

    1. Insert the batteries according to the instructions in the battery compartment.
    2. Insert the SD or microSD card (depending on the model) following the example in the picture next to the opening of the SD card slot.
    3. Turn your unit ON.
    4. Validate the behavior of your device according to the Quick Start Guide. If your device does not behave as it should, try resetting it to factory settings (factory reset).
    5. Turn your device ON to take photos (for cellular devices: make sure they send photos to your account).
    6. To ensure you have the most up-to-date firmware with the latest bug fixes and enhancements, consult the website support page for that device and compare the firmware version listed with the one you see on that device’s status page in the app. While updates are not essential to operation out of the box, it is a best practice to deploy your device to the field with the latest firmware version.
  1. Make sure you have a 2GB-32GB SD card, class 10 (the class is the recording speed of the card). Format your SD card in a computer before using it in your device.
  2. Make sure you have new batteries from the same package. AA batteries should be of 1.5 volt. We suggest alkaline or lithium batteries. Rechargeable AA batteries, regardless of brand, WILL NOT WORK and MAY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE. SPYPOINT sells compatible rechargeable lithium battery packs depending on the model you have. If you install your device in a cold location, we strongly suggest that you choose lithium batteries because they are more resistant to temperature changes. You can also use a 12 V battery with all our products. A 12V battery is strongly recommended if your device is installed far from your home due to its longevity and reliability.
  3. Make sure you choose the best cellular network for the specific location of your device. If your cell phone works well where you will use your device you can choose that carrier Nationwide(Non-Verizon) or Verizon.
  4. Make sure you adjust the settings on your device before you go to your hunting site. Refer to the “How to Program Settings on my Device” section. Note that cellular devices can be set up remotely if they are able to connect to your app at the location where they are installed.
  5. Make sure you have activated your cellular device with the application. Refer to the “How to Activate my Cellular Device” section.
  6. Make sure you have all the included accessories before going to your hunting site to setup the device.
  7. Put batteries in your device and make sure it turns on and functions properly. In the case of cellular devices, make sure that your device transmits photos before you install it. See the “How to test my device” section to make sure. Be sure to turn off your device once you have completed your tests.
  8. Keep your devices switched off during transport to avoid false detections that will unnecessarily drain your batteries taking unnecessary photos.
  9. Bring spare batteries as a precaution.
  10. All SPYPOINT devices are pre-programed with basic settings that are suitable for general use. If you want to change these settings, be sure to consult the following sections “How to Program Settings on my Device” and ”How to properly test my device”.
  11. We also explain the behavior of our different devices. You can consult the “Device Behaviors” section.
  • Make sure you clear the area in front of the installed unit. Any branches, tall grass, or other elements that can move in the wind could create false detections. Also take note of objects that can reflect the sun towards the camera obstructing the view.
  • Make sure to place the product facing south if your camera has a built-in solar panel and facing north if it does not. This will increase the performance of your solar panel and improve the quality of your photos.
  • Install the product at the same height as the body of the animal you want to see in your photos. (Recommendation for deer is the height of your belt)
  • Install the product so that it is parallel to the ground. This improves the detection range and the IR flash coverage as well.
  • Make sure the glass protecting the image sensor is not dirty. This could affect the image quality.
  • Install your device, with the included strap, firmly on a stable object (eg a tree). Make sure the unit is stationary and that the object on which it is installed is not likely to move with the wind. This would cause false camera detections.
  • Install your device in order to reduce the presence of sky in your photos. You will get better photos this way. Too much sky in the photo can cause the IR firing to be delayed in the evenings causing dark photos.
  • Try to have elements in the background to reflect the infrared light produced by the camera at night to get brighter photos. The denser the background, the better the quality of your night photos. Example: Open food plots or fields will result in darker photos. Pictures taken in the woods will appear noticeably brighter with adequate IR reflection.
  • If you have a cellular product, make sure you have a good signal where you install your device. Do not install your device if there is no signal. See the “How do I get my product to transmit” section to help you with any problems.
  • If you have a cellular device, make sure the antenna points to the sky as much as possible.
  • Make sure you insert the SD or microSD card in your device. All of our devices need a memory card to work properly.
  • Make sure to install the batteries in the right direction. Carefully follow the visual indications on the battery compartment for your device.
  • Make sure you have removed the small transparent “Remove before use” sticker on the detection lens (small black rectangle). The transparent sticker will prevent proper motion detection.
  • Make sure your device’s door (s) is properly closed and that the gaskets are clean. This will prevent water or residue from seeping into the device.

    ORDERS: HOW CAN I TRACK MY ORDER? WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY ORDER?

    You should have received an automated email to give you a tracking number information. Please, look at your junk email to make sure that you have it in your file. Once you have this number in hand, you can contact our agents at Customer service (chat or phone) to find out where your order is at.

    RETURNS: HOW DOES RETURN WORK? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

    If you have an issue with your device, before returning your device, if it’s for a physical damage, click here to read all the options offered to you (warranty verification, replacement parts or repair service). For other type of issue, you need to contact Customer Support (Chat or phone) so our agents can fix your issue. If they are unable to resolve your issue, they will go over the process with you and provide you with an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number to return your device to us. Keep this number in case you have further questions about your return. Our agents will be able to track your device with this number. After, you will be responsible to ship to us your device. Once we have received it, it will take approximately 7-10 business days for you to receive the replacement product if we have the product in stock.

    If you would like to send your device for repair, contact us to have the information regarding the reparation of your camera (cost, process and tracking number). You will be responsible to ship your device to us. The time to proceed will be approximately 30 days.

    If you ship your device to us for an exchange, contact us. Our agents will go over the process of verifying the warranty with you and the process. You will be responsible to ship your device to us. The time to proceed will be approximately 7-10 day after we receive your device.

Some of our devices have an integrated solar panel. These solar panels provide the camera with power to maintain the internal rechargeable battery.

    1. Always charge the internal battery using the 12V input, for 12 hours before installatin it outside.
    2. The integrated solar panels are fixed and cannot be rotated or removed.
    3. The camera should be facing south to maximize the solar panel results. When possible, mount the camera where the solar panel is in the direct sunlight. The solar panel will continue to operate even in the shade. It will only be less efficient.
    4. It may take several days or even weeks of sunlight before the integrated solar panel fully recharges the internal battery if it is allowed to discharge completely. We suggest that you recharge the battery manually for much faster results.

  • Power Source: Go to Settings > Advanced Configuration > Power Source and check if the correct battery type is selected for your camera. The SPYPOINT app will display incorrect battery reading if the power source is set incorrectly.  

Why is my camera saying the battery is low when I just changed them? 
  • Make sure all the batteries are of the same brand and have the same charge.  

  • Check that all the batteries are placed correctly in the camera; sometimes one or two can be in the wrong polarity and this affects the cameras functioning. 

  • If the camera is communicating with the SPYPOINT app, check what type of battery is selected. If the wrong type is selected, change the selection to the correct power source. 

  • Perform a factory reset to reset the values (this process differs depending on the model of camera). 

If the power issue persists, you will need to contact our customer support team for further assistance. 

Why does my battery say 0%? 

If your battery reading stays at 0%, even after charging the SPYPOINT lithium battery pack all night or using fresh AA batteries, then there may be a software glitch caused by the camera attempting to read from the wrong battery type. This does not affect the functionality of the camera; it will still sync and take photos despite the reading being wrong. 

To fix this issue, please access the Settings Advanced Configuration in the SPYPOINT app and change the Power Source, or if it is a LINK-S, Link-Dark or any other SPYPOINT camera with a screen, then you may attempt a factory reset to adjust the settings. 

How well do SHIEN cameras work in below freezing temperatures? 

All SHIEN cameras have been tested and have been approved for operating in temperatures from -30 to 50 degrees Celsius or -22 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. 

If you plan on using the camera in very cold climates, we recommend using lithium batteries, as they tend to perform better in the colder weather.

Our camera models are compatible with different battery types. Most of our models require AA batteries or a lithium battery back. 

Some of our models support using a 12V external battery pack in addition to the AA batteries or lithium battery pack for an extra-long battery life.

BATTERY TYPES

AA

We strongly recommend testing AA batteries (even new ones) with a multimeter before use. Make sure they are at least 1.5V and that all the batteries have the same battery percentage (or very close to). If you have one of eight batteries that is dead, your camera could stop transmitting photos.  

Our devices require the following types of AA batteries: 

  • non-rechargeable, 

  • from a premium brand, 

  • that are either lithium or alkaline.  

Off brand batteries may provide unreliable voltage or inconsistent battery life which can affect camera function.  

LIT Battery Pack

Some of our camera models are compatible with a L-shine rechargeable lithium battery pack. We recommend charging the battery pack for a maximum of 12 hours.  

Available models:

  • LIT 22: FLEX Series
  • LIT 10: LINK-MICRO Series and CELL-LINK
  • LIT 09: LINK-S Series, LINK-EVO et some FORCE models.
Solar panel with lithium battery

The solar panel can provide your camera with at least six months of autonomy. Before installation, charge the panel for 5-6 hours with the DC power adapter. When you install it, connect it to the 12V output port on your camera. Orient the panel so that it catches as much light as possible, ideally facing south.

It is compatible with all L-shine cameras with a 12V socket.

12V

The 12V is an external battery pack that provides an extra-long life to most of our device models. It can be used in addition to AA batteries or the L-shine lithium battery packs, as a supplemental source of power.  

Internal Battery

Our solar cameras are built with an internal battery. This includes the LINK-S, LINK-S-DARK and SOLAR-DARK. The solar panel provides solar energy to this internal battery, but it still needs to be charged. This should be done for 24-48 hours by plugging in the SPYPOINT charging cable provided.  

BATTERY TYPE SETTING 

Please be sure that the Battery Type setting matches the batteries you are using in your device to ensure an accurate percentage reading. To do so:
Open the mobile app > Cameras > Settings (of the respective camera) > Advanced Configuration > Battery Type.

Be sure to adjust the settings of your device according to your needs, but be aware that many settings directly impact battery life like, transfer frequency, photo burst, photo delay, video, etc.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use AA batteries and an external 12 Volt battery at the same time? 

Yes, you can. If the 12V battery dies, it will use the AA as a backup.
All our devices are compatible with 12V batteries (which have a much longer life than AA batteries). All you need is the proper cable. 

Why is my battery draining too fast ?

There can be many factors causing the battery to drain quickly: 

  • Transfer frequency: Cellular transmission, especially if your camera is set to “Each Detection.” The higher the frequency of photo transfers, the faster the batteries drain. 

  • Videos: Video mode requires the camera to stay in action longer, which will consume the batteries faster. Also, the longer the video, the faster the batteries will drain. 

  • Night mode: This mode requires the flash to turn on to take a proper photo, which consumes more power. The “Boost” and “Blur reduction” options in Night mode drain batteries faster than “Optimal” or “No Glow.” 

  • Polarity– AA batteries placed upside down. If you have new batteries, but the camera does not display 100% battery level, one of the batteries may be upside down. 

  • Delay: This feature allows you to select the time elapsed before the camera can detect again and take the next photo. If you want to capture multiple photos, you will need to use a shorter delay which means more battery consumption. The shorter the delay, the more photos the camera will take, which will consume the batteries faster.  

  • Multishot:  This option tells the camera how many photos it should take for each detection. The higher is the multishot, the more pictures the camera will take, which will consume the batteries faster. 

  • Low signal: When the signal is low, the camera will try to establish a connection for a longer period, which will consume more batteries.
